Use advice for data set | Users applying the LCA data need to account for technological changes in carbon anode production processes since 2008. The data should be utilized for the specific application of aluminum production and should not be generalized to other processes without proper validation. Furthermore, the user should consider the regional context as the background data is localized to the Chinese market. Where applicable, adjust for differences in technology and production practices when extrapolating to other regions or more recent time frames. |
Technical purpose of product or process | The technical usage of the carbon anode produced from the aluminum electrolysis process using petroleum coke as described in the data set is primarily for electrolytic aluminum production. Carbon anodes are consumed in the Hall-Héroult process, which is the industry standard method for producing aluminum from alumina. These carbon anodes are designed to operate at high temperatures and are integral to the aluminum smelting operation. |

Data selection and combination principles | The data in this study refers to the LCA data of PA, SA, electricity, and other background data. The PA data were obtained from statistical data sources, and the SA data were mainly obtained from the literatures. The background data were mainly derived from the Chinese localization LCA database CAS RCEES 2018, which was established by the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences and covers LCA data for energy, materials, transportation, waste management etc. | ||||
