General comment | Wheat is a species of cereal grasses of the genus Triticum and their edible grains. It is one of the oldest and most important of the cereal crops, widely cultivated for its seed, a cereal grain that is a worldwide staple food. The most widely grown is common wheat (T. aestivum). It was first cultivated in the regions of the Fertile Crescent around 9600 BCE. Wheat provides antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. |
