General comment Detergent is a surfactant or a mixture of surfactants with cleansing properties when in dilute solutions. Conventionally, detergent is used to mean synthetic cleaning compounds as opposed to soap. They are chemically different from soaps but are able to emulsify oils, hold dirt in suspension, and act as wetting agents. Detergents are not prepared from fats and oils, are not inactivated by hard water, and have wetting-agent and emulsifying-agent properties. They are effective even in hard or saltwater, unlike soaps, because they do not develop scum.
