General comment | Scouring is the process of washing grease wool. It involves thorough washing or deep cleaning, which is more involved than simply washing fabric in a washing machine. Scoured wool is tested to International Wool Textile Organization (IWTO) standards to verify quality and quantity. Raw wool is washed or scoured to remove not only dirt but also the naturally occurring oil, lanolin, from the wool fibers. Scouring washes the wool in chemicals to remove the natural lanolin layer, but the process yields only about half of the initial wool. |
