Planographic printing is a process that involves printing from a flat surface. It is different from relief printing which uses a raised surface, or intaglio printing which uses an incised surface. Lithography and offset lithography are planographic processes that rely on the property that water will not mix with oil. The image is created by applying a tusche (greasy substance) to a plate or stone. The design area of the plate attracts the oil-based ink and repels water, while the non-printing area does the opposite.
