Biomass is renewable organic material that comes from plants and animals. It contains stored chemical energy from the sun, produced by plants through photosynthesis. Biomass can be burned directly for heat or converted to liquid and gaseous fuels. Agriculture and forestry are important biomass suppliers, providing raw material for the production of bioenergy. Agricultural land and forestland are considered as two largest potential biomass sources for meeting the Renewable Fuel Standard mandate for cellulosic biofuels.
