General comment Cobalt nanoparticles are used in various technological areas including the development of chemical sensors, production of hydrogen evolution, water splitting catalysts, and supercapacitors. The performances are influenced by the size and morphology of the cobalt. An advanced synchrotron-based in situ X-ray diffraction technique is used to track and monitor the formation and phase selection of cobalt in electrodeposition. The impacts of a number of controlling factors including the pH of the electrolyte and deposition overpotential are systematically studied.
