General comment Ducks are hardy birds that can survive in a number of diverse and varied landscapes around the world. They are particularly common in the northern hemisphere, where many species face harsh winters and competition for food. The mallard or wild duck is a dabbling duck that breeds throughout the temperate and subtropical Americas, Eurasia, and North Africa. On average, ducks live between 5 to 10 years, depending on their breed and living conditions. However, some ducks can live much longer if they are well-cared for.
