| General comment | Methyl chloride (CH3Cl) is a colourless, flammable, toxic gas. It is primarily prepared by the reaction of methanol with hydrogen chloride, but can also be prepared by the chlorination of methane. It is used chiefly as a refrigerant and methylating agent. It is also an abundant halocarbon and the largest source of chlorine in the stratosphere, thus considered an important ozone-depleting gas. |
