Ammonium nitrate is a white crystalline salt of ammonium and nitrate ions. It is used as a fertilizer and an explosive in agriculture and mining. It is produced by the acid-base reaction of ammonia with nitric acid. It contains about 33.5 percent nitrogen, all of which is in forms utilizable by plants. It is also used to modify the detonation rate of other explosives and as an oxidizing agent in the ammonals.
