General comment | Sesame, also known as Sesamum indicum or benne, is an erect annual plant of the family Pedaliaceae. It has been grown since antiquity for its seeds, which are used as food and flavouring and from which a prized oil is extracted. The plant is found in most of the tropical, subtropical, and southern temperate areas of the world. The seeds are tiny, oil-rich and grow in pods on the plant. They have been used in folk medicine for thousands of years. |
