General comment | Freight rail, also known as cargo train or goods train, is a group of freight cars hauled by one or more locomotives on a railway, transporting cargo between the shipper and the intended destination. It is part of the logistics chain and can be used for entire journeys or part of a route where ocean or road freight isn't possible. The North American freight rail network is operated by seven Class I railroads, 22 regional railroads and over 580 short line railroads. |
