| General comment | Spodumene is a pyroxene mineral typically found in lithium-rich pegmatites. It is usually associated with other lithium minerals such as lepidolite, eucryptite, and petalite. It has a chemical composition of LiAlSi 2 O 6 but small amounts of sodium sometimes substitute for lithium. It is an important ore of lithium and a source of ceramic materials. It can also be pink, lilac, or green. Crystals are prismatic, flattened, and typically striated along their length. Gem varieties of the mineral usually exhibit strong pleochroism. |
