A transformer substation is a part of an electrical generation, transmission, and distribution system. Transformers within the substation change the voltage levels between high transmission voltages and lower distribution voltages. The transformer essentially 'steps up' or 'steps down' the voltage levels. The substation is constructed with a structure of thin laminated sheets of ferrous metal, most commonly silicon steel, that the primary and secondary windings of the transformer are wrapped around. Most substation transformers rely on an electrical grade insulating liquid to cool the copper windings and core.
