General comment | Kraft pulping is the dominant manufacturing process by which wood chips are transformed into pulp, the intermediate material from which a broad spectrum of finished or semi-finished paper products are made. It involves the use of heat and chemicals to pulp wood chips for making paper, producing gaseous sulfur compounds called 'total reduced sulfur' or TRS gases. Wood chips are treated with a mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide and cooked under high pressure to disintegrate the chips into smaller fibers. The resulting pulp is used to make paper products. |
