| General comment | Ferric chloride is a common compound of iron and chlorine in which iron possesses +3 oxidation state. It is a deliquescent dark salt FeCl3 that readily hydrates to the yellow-orange form and is used especially for etching, in sewage treatment, and as an astringent. In its anhydrous form, FeCl3, it occurs as a black-brown, water-soluble solid; in its hydrated form, FeCl3⋅xH2O, it occurs in orange-yellow, deliquescent crystals. |
