They are formed through the weathering profile of rare earth elements (REEs), the potential of clay minerals in adsorbing REEs, and the ion-exchange mechanism. Ionic clays represent a sustainable type of rare earth element deposit, being non-radioactive and having a low CAPEX requirement.
