| General comment | Phosphorus ore, also known as phosphate, is an essential ingredient in thousands of products, including herbicides, lithium-ion batteries, and soft drinks. About 95 percent of this ore is used to make fertilizer. The remaining is processed into white phosphorus. Phosphogypsum, a waste product from manufacturing fertilizer, emits radon, a radioactive gas and contains radioactive elements uranium, thorium and radium. Phosphate rock mining is the fifth largest mining industry in the United States. |
