General comment | Radioactive waste is a type of hazardous waste that contains radioactive material. It is a result of many activities, including nuclear medicine. It is defined as any material that is either radioactive or contaminated by radioactivity and for which no further use is foreseen. It encompasses a wide range of radioactive isotopes in a variety of physical and chemical forms. Radioactivity means that the atoms in a given material have too much energy or mass to be stable. These wastes can range from a little higher than natural background levels to the much higher radioactivity of used reactor fuel and parts of nuclear reactors. |
