General comment | Metallurgical silicon is a hard, brittle crystalline solid with a blue-grey metallic luster. It is a tetravalent metalloid and semiconductor, and a member of group 14 in the periodic table. The silicon is treated to remove impurities such as calcium and aluminum. Upgraded Metallurgical-Grade (UMG) silicon has raised interest as an alternative material for silicon solar cells due to its low cost, low environmental impact and low CAPEX. |
