General comment | Polyelectrolyte gels are crosslinked ion-containing polymers with exceptional swelling capabilities, expanding up to 100 times in salt-free solutions. Their swelling is due to a balance between elasticity and osmotic pressure from counterions and salt ions. Cationic polyelectrolytes are positively charged and attract anions, while anionic ones are negatively charged and attract cations. They are used in flocculation, coagulation, and can respond to stimuli like pH, salt concentration, or electric fields. |
