Titanium tetrachloride is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a strong penetrating odor. It is not found naturally and is made from minerals that contain titanium. It rapidly forms hydrochloric acid and titanium compounds when in contact with water. Commercial samples are yellowish and it hydrolyzes in air with spectacular emission of white clouds. It is used in the conversion of titanium ores to titanium metal via the Kroll process.
