General comment | Yttrium oxide (Y 2 O 3) is an excellent host for rare-earth dopant ions due to its luminescence characteristics, color purity, and chemical and thermal stabilities. It is a soft, silver-metallic, lustrous and highly crystalline transition metal in group 3. Yttrium oxide is the most thermodynamically stable compound in the group of metal oxides. It is resistant to numerous reactive molten metals and can withstand temperatures up to ∼2200°C. It is used in material science to make phosphors that provide the red color of picture tubes in televisions. |
