| General comment | Citrate is any anionic form, salt, or ester of citric acid. It is used in a solution called citrate phosphate dextrose (CPD) which contains citric acid, sodium citrate, monobasic sodium phosphate, and dextrose. This is the primary anticoagulant used for preservation of whole blood or red blood cells for up to 21 days. It also reacts with oxaloacetate to yield citrate and to liberate coenzyme A, a reaction catalyzed by citrate synthase. |
