General comment | Sulphonation, also known as Sulfonation, refers to any of the various ways for producing sulfonic acids. It involves the reactions of aromatic hydrocarbons with sulfuric acid, chlorosulfonic acid, or sulphur trioxide, the reactions of organic halogen compounds with inorganic sulfites, and the oxidation of certain classes of organic sulphur compounds. It is the process of substituting a hydrogen atom for the SO3H sulfonic acid group. A typical alkane can be sulphonated by treating it with oleum (fuming sulfuric acid), starting with hexane. |
