General comment | Emulsion explosives (EE) are a recently developed class of energetic materials that are a step forward from traditional materials based on ammonium nitrate. They are obtained by sensitizing an EE matrix, a water-in-oil emulsion of ammonium nitrate. The slurry explosives are usually comprised of ammonium nitrate, inorganic oxidizing salt, thickening agent for the water, fuel, and liquid. They have taken over traditional explosives such as gun powder and ANFO. It is a jelly type explosive that can be pumped into holes in rock for blasting. |
