Use advice for data set | Users of this LCA data set should primarily apply the market-value-based allocation method recommended by the metals industry to partition environmental impacts among the different types of REOs produced. Additionally, specific attention should be given to the technological stages within the process chain, namely mining, beneficiation, calcination, extraction, and roasting. Users are advised to use Chinese-specific life cycle data when available to reflect regional environmental impact accurately. However, if not available, European life cycle inventory (LCI) data sets can be used as a substitute. When using the data set to evaluate the production of individual REEs or REE-based technologies and products, the conservative nature of the LCA results should be considered. |
Technical purpose of product or process | The rare earth oxides (REOs) extracted through the Bayan Obo process are primarily used in various high-technology sectors, including electronics, magnets, optics, and as catalysts in automotive and petrochemical industries. These oxides are essential components in the manufacturing of advanced technology products such as smartphones, computer hard disks, wind turbines, hybrid and electric vehicles, and LED lights. |
