Use advice for data set
Users of this dataset should apply the mass-based allocation method for assessing the environmental impacts associated with the production of crude ore and REOs. Moreover, the dataset provides both market-based and exergetic-based allocation schemes for partitioning the environmental impacts among different REOs (light, medium, heavy, and neodymium). Preferably, the market-value-based allocation should be used, as favored by the metals industry. When analyzing the environmental profile of REEs, consideration of Chinese-specific life cycle data is recommended, when available. Otherwise, European life cycle inventory (LCI) data may be used. The scope of the LCA is cradle-to-gate with a functional unit of 1 kg of REO. The data thus can be extended to evaluate individual REE production and applications in REE-based technology and products.
Data set use approval
General comment
The technical use of this dataset is to describe the process chain for the production of rare earth oxides (REOs) from the Bayan Obo mine in China. The Bayan Obo mine's crude ore, consisting of monazite and bastnasite, is subject to a series of processes including mining, beneficiation, calcination, extraction, and roasting for REO production. This dataset can be used to understand the environmental impact and process efficiency of producing rare earth elements essential for manufacturing electronics, clean energy technologies, and various high-tech applications.
